?Mappers Question Please help? much help needed
by on (#45852)
I found these mapper alternates for the powerpak and was wondering what they do? is it going to make a difference and when playing what games? I know nothing about programming and figure i ask the experts.
does anyone know of these mappers or programers who wrote these??

They were listed on this site http://www.nesworld.com/nespowerpak.php

My question is should i overwrite the ones provided to me on retrousb for the powerpack site or leave it alone?

Alternate Mapper 9 (by Loopy)
Alternate Mapper 23 (by Kyuusaku)
Alternate Mapper 33 (by Kyuusaku)

Per this list:
  • Mapper 9 (MMC2) affects the Punch-Out!! games. It shares some functionality with mapper 10 (MMC4), used in the Japan-only Fire Emblem and Famicom Wars, so fixes to 9 might be released along with fixes for 10.
  • Mapper 23 (VRC2/VRC4) affects the Japanese version of Contra and a few Japan-only games.
  • Mapper 33 also appears to have been used only in Japan.

More mappers
These are the mappers I made that have extra audio.
Namco-106 (mapper 19)
VRC6 (mapper 24)
Sunsoft 5B (mapper 69)
Famicom Disk System (FDS)
NSF player (with VRC6, FDS, N106 expansion audio)

One more question loopy since i have the man himself here!
what can i do to play my FDS or japan files i downloaded your files and saw one called FDSBIOS.bin just put that into the powerpak directory and thats it or need other files as well like your mappers. Or use the convertor
to NES format you provided.

Thanks for answering me... Very much appreciate your work! A+++

For FDS, put F.MAP and FDSBIOS.BIN in the powerpak directory. You also need the latest mappers (1.20) from retrousb to load FDS files.

The surprising thing is when you open the archives for kyuusaku's 23 and 33 mappers, you find mapper map17.map and map21.map respectively (23/33). So Gradius 2 and other Japanese games for mapper 21 (or 33 according to the downloads on nesworld) and Parodius (J) for mapper 17 (or 23 according to the downloads on nesworld).

"Eye of Newt, I cast a hex on you." It appears that the map??.map file names use hexadecimal numbers.
  • 23 = 2 * 10 + 3 * 1 = 1 * 16 + 7 * 1 = $17
  • 33 = 3 * 10 + 3 * 1 = 2 * 16 + 1 * 1 = $21

Agh, I C now :) I've never tried Gradius II on the NES PowerPak, so I'll have to see if it plays or not; The same applies to Parodius. I saw the same mappers the original poster brought up, and I was wondering the same thing he was, and once I saw them 'mislabeled," I did some research on the mappers they were named as. It's too bad they are actually in Hex because the addition of mappers 17 and 21 would have been kindly welcomed. Thanks for correcting me and solving this minor puzzle. :) Now I'm off to find out about the two games I mentioned previously...

Both games work fine on the PowerPAK with the correct mapper files.
